In May of 1952, X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Franklin discovered the shape of DNA: the double-helix. Franklin's discovery was essential to understanding not only the structure, but also the function of DNA as the carrier of all genetic data. In 1953, two male scientists published a paper about the structure of DNA after viewing Franklin's work without her consent. They were awarded the Nobel Prize, along with the man who showed them Franklin's work, in 1962. 

The DNA Quilt Block creates a double-helix in honor of the woman who discovered its shape. It includes split quarter square triangles, strip piecing, and half square triangles. The quilt block finishes at 12" square, meaning the quilt block, once incorporated into a quilt, will measure 12" x 12".
