TUTORIAL: How to Sew Wine Glass Slippers- Book Club Gifts

Surprise your book club friends with something they'll treasure.

In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll guide you through the process of creating quilted wine glass slippers—the perfect, thoughtful gift for your fellow book lovers. These coasters are easy to make, and you can choose fabrics that represent your favorite book club moments or themes.

Materials required:

Download the template here

Print out the template. Make sure to set your printer scale to 100% or "actual size". It is best to print from a dedicated PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, rather than printing from a browser. Often, scaling is automatically applied when printing from a browser.

Measure the 1" test square to verify that the template was printed to the correct size.

Cut along the outer, solid black line.

  • (4) 5" squares, they can all be the same fabric, all different fabrics, or 2 each of the same fabric
  • (1) 5" stabilizer
  • pen
  • thread
  • scissors, one for cutting paper and one for cutting fabric
  • sewing machine

Cutting Instructions:

1. Use the template to draw a circle on the wrong side of the fabric. Cut along the drawn line. Repeat for the remaining 3 fabrics. Designate (2) circles for the bottom of the slipper and (2) circles for the top of the slipper.

     2. Use the template to draw one circle on the smooth side of the stabilizer. Cut along the drawn line.

    3. Place the rough side of the stabilizer directly on top of (1) bottom circle, on the wrong side.

    4. Follow instructions for your specific stabilizer in order to attach the stabilizer to the fabric. If you don't have instructions, set your iron to the hottest setting without steam. Once hot, place iron directly on the fabric/stabilizer combo with the stabilizer on top. Hold iron (do not move iron) for at least 20 seconds. The heat will melt the stabilizer to the fabric.

    5. Fold the top circles in half so that wrong sides are together and press.

    6. Assemble the pieces as follows from bottom to top: bottom circle with stabilizer on top, second bottom circle (right side up), two top pieces forming a circle. Pin half circles in place.

    7. Sew scant 1/4" around the edge. Back stitch where the two half circles meet to reinforce the seam.

    8. Make small cuts all around the circle, making sure to not cut the thread. You can either make small cut out triangles or just make a single cut.

    9. Turn the slipper inside out and push out the edges as much as possible.

    10. Slip on to the base of your wine glass and enjoy. (This part may take a little trial and error to do. I find it is easier to put the slipper on the wine glass base at the opening and then work its way on. This is where a scant 1/4" seam will come in handy!)

Now that you've gotten the hang of making one, make a whole bunch and gift them to your friends and fellow book lovers! You can create basic book-themed wine glass slippers with script text (like the one I used from Riley Blake's Jane Austen's line). Or, you can choose fabrics that remind you of your favorite book or the book you're currently reading. Whatever you do, put your own personal touches on them and share them with others.
